Two people were killed in a fire that occurred this Saturday morning, shortly after 6 a.m., in an apartment in a building in the public housing project of Kermabon, in Tréboul, in the commune of Douarnenez. At least five injuries were also reported.
Several apartments were affected and the building was completely evacuated. Significant emergency resources were mobilized on site.
A widespread conflagration
First, a gendarmerie patrol from Douarnenez arrived on the scene, around 6:30 a.m. The flames extend over each side of the building, into a first level apartment. Outside, a victim is on the ground, a man in his forties, in cardiorespiratory arrest. Attempts at resuscitation failed to save him.
The firefighters arrive immediately. Lieutenant Nicolas Perrazi, head of the Douarnenez rescue center, is in command of the operation: “We were called around 6:30 a.m. for an apartment fire at number 13, when the emergency services arrived the first person’s accommodation level was completely ablaze. Flames were coming out of each side of the building. It is a crossing accommodation. It was a widespread conflagration.” He added: “A second victim was discovered inside. His condition does not allow him to be identified at this time.”
The lieutenant continues: “Other residents were in relative emergency, mainly people who inhaled a little smoke. Two of them were taken to hospital for routine examinations. »
An ongoing investigation
The general gas supply to the residence was cut off from the start of the intervention and the residents of the building, as well as those of the neighboring building, were evacuated from their homes for the duration of the operation. They were able to return to their apartments quickly, except those on the alley affected by the fire.
The fire mainly affected two accommodations: that of the first level, completely destroyed and that of the floor above damaged. The neighboring homes were just filled with smoke.
The intervention mobilized around thirty firefighters from the emergency centers of Douarnenez, Cap-Sizun, Plozévet, Quimper, Pouldreuzic, and around ten vehicles: three ambulances, three fire vans, two large ladders, the command post vehicle and two logistics vehicles.
Concerning the origins and circumstances of this fire, an investigation is underway. The firefighters dispatched two teams to research the causes and circumstances of the fires, coming from Carhaix (29) and Landerneau (29). The gendarmerie’s criminal identification service is also at work. The Quimper prosecutor came to the scene.
