How can such violence be justified? According to the Besançon prosecutor, a 21-year-old young man was indicted and imprisoned on Friday for the murder in Doubs of a 59-year-old cook because of his homosexuality.
The individual was indicted for “aggravated intentional homicide, because it was committed because of the sexual orientation of the victim,” said the prosecutor, Etienne Manteaux, during a press conference. The accused faces life imprisonment, AFP pointed out.
Suspect spotted at crime scene
The events took place shortly after midnight on Thursday when the gendarmes were warned by witnesses that a man on the ground was being beaten in Morteau, a town near the Swiss border. Despite their rapid intervention with the emergency services, the 59-year-old victim died on the spot.
On the other hand, an individual was spotted near the scene of the tragedy by the police. The 21-year-old man, whose shoes are stained with blood, admits to having kicked the victim, particularly in the head. After the attack, he returned home to change, taking off his blood-stained pants, before returning to the scene.
Three videos of the drama
The tragedy occurred in a bar, where the two men had spent a good part of the evening drinking. Witnesses reported that the young man received advances from the cook.
According to investigators from the Pontarlier research brigade, the suspect’s phone contained three videos, filmed by the person himself during the attack before sending them to relatives. “In the first scene the victim is seated with a bloody face; on the second the victim is lying on the ground, still making sounds; on the third, it no longer emits any sound,” detailed the prosecutor.
“Unbearable” images
In the images, the author comments on his action before insulting the victim, lying on the ground. During his hearings, the young man admitted that “it was the sexual proposals that were made that made him angry,” said Etienne Manteaux. “The victim’s mother, his only family, described her son as never having had a stable emotional relationship. She is overwhelmed,” he confided.
For Damien Mathieu, second in command of the Doubs Gendarmerie Group, the videos show “unbearable” images, “an extreme outburst of violent beatings”. The suspect had consumed alcohol and cannabis at the time of the incident. Already convicted of armed violence, he was to be tried for other acts of violence in November.
