To improve cohesion within his fire station and avoid budget cuts: a former fire chief lights six forest fires

The man was sentenced to five years in prison, two of which were suspended.

In April 2020, a wooded area of ​​38 hectares was destroyed by flames in Espagnac, in Corrèze. Quickly, a man was arrested. He denied being at the origin of the fire but admitted having lit a fire a little further away that day.

Then, between March 22 and 25, 2022, four fires ravaged forest areas. One of them, near Eyrein, required the intervention of 110 firefighters and a Canadair.

Five years in prison, two of which were suspended

During his hearing in police custody, the suspect, who turned out to be the firefighter in charge of the station from Marcillac-la-Croisille had explained fear that budget cuts does not target its barracks, personnel and equipment due to too few interventions.

Recognized guilty of starting six forest fires, the 63-year-old man was ultimately sentenced to five years in prison, two of which were suspended.
