Better Practices, Better Planet is one of the longest-running sustainability initiatives for a manufacturing industry in the United States. Since 1998, AF&PA members have been required to commit to environmental, health and safety (EHS) principles. In 2011, AF&PA launched the Sustainability Goals Better Practices, Better Planet 2020. Having achieved most of these objectives, the AF&PA is now entering the second generation of its sustainability objectives: Better Practices, Better Planet 2030.
Sustainability Award winners exemplify the industry’s long-standing commitment to improving practices to develop sustainable products for a sustainable future. The 2024 Sustainability Awards winners were chosen by a diverse judging panel of sustainability experts from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), GreenBlue, Institute for Sustainable Technology of Wisconsin, Clemson University, Resources for the Future and the National Association of Manufacturers.
The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) advocates for America’s paper and wood product manufacturers by promoting evidence-based public policy. The forest products industry is circular, using renewable and recyclable resources, and is committed to a sustainability approach with the initiative Better Practices, Better Planet 2030. Accounting for approximately 5% of U.S. manufacturing GDP, the industry generates $350 billion in products each year, employs approximately 925,000 people, and pays $65 billion in wages.
