The Secretary General of the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG, former ruling party), Angélique Ngoma, in a communication held on Friday November 8, 2024, called on all activists to launch a local campaign across the entire territory in order to convince the undecided to vote for “yes” in the constitutional referendum that Gabon is organizing on November 16.
“This active and resource-saving local campaign must, however, take place in peace, with dignity and respect for people and property,” said Ms. Ngoma, subsequently encouraging her comrades to each take their pilgrim’s staff “for this good cause”.
The CEO believes that all activists must stay in tune with the times by voting massively in favor of the new constitution which stems from the deep aspirations of the majority of the Gabonese people, contrary to what the evil tongues say.
“It is a Constitution that suits us because it resembles us; it draws the lessons of our History and places us in the present time”she argued.
The administrative boss of the party founded by the late President Omar Bongo in 1968 emphasizes that this new fundamental law which will give birth to the 2e Republic, constitutes real progress because it establishes the strengthening of the democratic field with the affirmation of civil society, the recognition of identity and national priority and the separation of powers.
For her, “it is a step forward especially in terms of strengthening the eligibility conditions, the intangible limitation of the number of mandates, the refusal of atavistic succession, the strengthening of the legitimacy and responsibility of the Head of State”.
The referendum which will be held on November 16 will allow Gabon to adopt a new constitution if the yes vote wins. A crucial step that will allow the country to gradually move towards a return to constitutional order.
The country has been in transition since August 30, 2023, the date of the military coup (also called the liberation coup) which overthrew the regime of Ali Bongo, whose state of health has been fragile since his stroke in October 2018. The transition is ensured by the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI) led by General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.
