Can Democrats still win the House?

The situation has already been resolved in the Senate. Republicans will have at least 53 seats and a majority, having made gains in West Virginia, Montana, Ohio and, surprisingly, Pennsylvania. Two races remain to be decided, those of Nevada and Arizona, where the Democratic candidates are in advance. What about the House of Representatives? Do the Democrats still have any chance of preventing the Republicans from achieving a double take in Congress?

These chances are not great. As of this writing, Republicans have already won 212 of the 218 seats they need to maintain their majority, according to CNN. Democrats had 200. Twenty-three races had yet to be decided, most of them in California. Democrats were ahead in 13 of those races and Republicans in 10.

Democrats, who controlled 214 seats before the deaths of Sheila Jackson and Bill Pascrell earlier this year, need to make a net gain of four seats to steal their majority from Republicans. Not impossible, but not far. Vote counting in California will extend into next week, with the state accepting ballots received a week after Election Day if they were mailed on November 5.

This count will also have an impact on the final results of the presidential election and will confirm or not the victory of Donald Trump in the popular vote.
