The visit to Jerusalem on Thursday of the French Minister of Foreign Affairs was marked by a diplomatic incident.
Jean-Noël Barrot was to visit Éleona, a site managed by France. Shortly before his arrival, two gendarmes were arrested by the Israeli police, who, according to him, had entered “army” et “without authorization” in the place.
After the incident, the head of French diplomacy denounced “an unacceptable situation”.
A few hours later, France announced that it had summoned the Israeli ambassador to Paris.
For its part, Israel denies being at the origin of the incident and affirms that the presence of the police officers responded to usual security protocols. “The procedures were clarified in advance during preparatory discussions with the French Embassy in Israel,” said the Israeli Foreign Minister in a statement.
The French domain in Jerusalem is made up of four possessions: Eleona (which has belonged to France for 150 years), the Tomb of the Kings, the Basilica of Sainte-Anne and the former crusader commandery of Abu Gosh, which are managed by the French Consulate.
