Two individuals were discovered in the rubble of a violent fire which ravaged a home in Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, in Gaspésie, on Wednesday evening.
First responders were called to go to the 1re East Avenue around 8:30 p.m. for a large fire. They quickly discovered that two people were inside.
Unconscious, the man in his sixties and the woman in her thirties were transported to a hospital. The link between the two people has not been established by authorities.
“Unfortunately, their death was noted in the hours that followed,” confirms Frédéric Deshaies, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).
An investigation was opened to shed light on the causes and circumstances of the blaze. Thursday morning, the scene was still protected to allow a fire scene technician to analyze it.
No hypothesis as to the origin of the fire is favored at the moment. It is also specified that the event is not necessarily due to a criminal act, despite the involvement of the SQ in this matter.
“As soon as a person dies, we investigate,” underlines Mr. Deshaies.
