The Georgian Olivette Veilleux has just received the 2024 Elder Tribute Prizefor the Chaudière-Appalaches region, because of his exceptional volunteer commitment.
The award ceremony was held last Tuesday evening in Quebec City, along with the 16 other regional recipients who were honored in this way.
A volunteer since the age of 30, Ms. Veilleux has always been deeply involved in her community. For example, she organized parties and plays in her parish in addition to founding a popular broomball league. She was also a choir director for over 10 years. Very close to children, in 1976 she founded the Palais des enfants pre-kindergarten as well as, two years later, a daycare in Saint-Georges.
In 2011, she became a new resident of the Manoir du Quartier. She quickly proposed ideas and participated in the implementation of projects aimed at improving the lives of residents. As head of various activities, she sets up four library premises. She takes care of the operation of the service and organizes herself so that people with less mobility can have access to books by ensuring, for example, delivery. Moreover, the lady always takes the time to support people in the residence in need, whether to combat isolation or to deliver meals.
Olivette Veilleux also participates in the implementation of events, notably highlighting the Christmas holidays. She reconnected with her old loves by becoming, in 2015, the director of the residence’s choir, made up of around thirty members. She organizes concerts twice a year, the profits of which go to charity, and in which she invites children to participate, in order to encourage intergenerational exchanges. She also organizes plays, as she used to do in her community.
«Olivette is an exceptional citizen and deeply committed to our communitydeclared the MP for Beauce-Sud, Samuel Poulin, who was present during the handover. His creativity, his passion and his desire to help others translate into concrete actions to animate the residents of the Manor and the entire population. By awarding this national prize, our government recognizes the contribution of a remarkable elder from Beauce.»
Note that the ceremony took place in the presence of the Minister responsible for Seniors and Minister for Health, Sonia Bélanger.
