The United States, part of which is still stunned and full of bitterness because of Donald Trump’s large victory, began to prepare on Thursday for the democratic and orderly transition. Dozens of elections for the U.S. House of Representatives have yet to be called, but Republicans are increasingly optimistic about their ability to maintain their narrow majority and thus regain control of the three branches of the power in Washington, presidency, Senate and House, as at the start of Donald Trump’s first term. Furthermore, speculation is beginning on the personalities who will be approached for the various ministries, notably the most important, Defense, Foreign Affairs, Justice, Treasury and Commerce, or even at the White House, a transition team having to examine the potential candidates and draw up his list of priority tasks.
Separately, the Justice Department has begun suspending two of the federal prosecutions against Donald Trump, consistent with a longstanding policy of not prosecuting a sitting president. The victory of the Republican candidate caused the dollar to skyrocket, Wednesday and then Thursday, against the pound sterling, the euro and the Japanese yen. For his part, Joe Biden, who is starting to be criticized in his camp for not having thrown in the towel sooner when it was obvious that he was no longer able to campaign given his numerous absences and confusions, was to address the nation for the first time since the election.
