The highlight of Prince William’s visit to South Africa, the Earthshot Awards ceremony in Cape Town marked the heir to the British throne’s four-day trip.
Focused on the environment, this visit was an opportunity for the prince to organize for the first time the annual Earthshot awards ceremony on the continent which inspired the project.
“During a trip to Namibia and Tanzania. I was lucky enough to see some of the amazing wildlife that inhabits this continent. But what really struck me was the incredible impact local people had on the environment around them. Thanks to their ingenuity and creativity, biodiversity is returning, animals are protected and jobs are created. “, said Prince William, Prince of Wales.
Prince William actually established the Earthshot Prize in 2020 through his Royal Foundation, to help entrepreneurs grow their eco-friendly businesses.
“And I invite you now to join the movement for climate innovation that is happening around the world. Because that’s why we’re here… to champion dreamers, thinkers and innovators from all walks of life who share the ambition to build a better, more sustainable world. We will do everything in our power to support them and help them accelerate the scaling of their solutions. Because when they succeed, we all succeed. When they prosper, we all prosper. And when they win, we all win,” explained Prince William, Prince of Wales.
The Earthshot Prize awarded grants worth $1.2 million to five companies for their sustainable and environmentally friendly innovations.
Among the winners are an American company which has developed a technology allowing the use of thermal waste from heavy industries to produce electricity, a Ghanaian organization that trains people in waste collection and management, and a Kazakhstan nature conservation group that is protecting a vast grassland and saving the saiga antelope from extinction.
