The day after the election of Donald Trump, Emmanuel Macron called on Europe this Thursday to “act” and “defend (its) interests” from Budapest where European leaders are meeting.
Emmanuel Macron is convinced of this: European leaders, despite their different sensitivities, have a common interest that “Russia does not win [la] war” in Ukraine.
The President of the Republic sent the message this Thursday, November 7 in Budapest where EU leaders are meeting, the day after the re-election of Donald Trump in the United States, which raises concerns about the support provided to kyiv.
In the event of a Russian victory, “this means that there is, on our borders, an imperial power to which we say: 'you can be expansionist'”, launched the President of the French Republic to the other leaders present, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky…But also today's host, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, unconditional support of Donald Trump.
A “decisive” moment
The latter assured that he could impose peace in Ukraine in “24 hours”, without ever explaining how, but by decrying the extent of the aid paid to kyiv to resist the Russian invasion. He also made laudatory remarks about Vladimir Putin.
If he affirmed that the role of the EU “is not to comment” on the re-election of the American billionaire, Emmanuel Macron judged that Europe was facing a “decisive” “moment in history”.
“[Donald Trump] was elected by the American people and will defend the interests of Americans […] The question is: are we ready to defend the interests of Europeans”, he declared, making this issue a “priority”. The president thus calls for “action”, to “believe in our sovereignty and our strategic autonomy”.
For Europe, the line to follow “must be neither in a naive transatlanticism, nor in calling into question our alliances, nor in a narrow nationalism which would not allow us to take up this challenge in the face of China and the United States of America,” he said.
