VIDEO. Champions League: the huge blunder of the Aston Villa defender, who takes the ball in hand for no reason and causes a penalty

the essential
The English lost to Bruges (1-0) during this fourth day of the Champions League. The fault lies in an inexplicable gesture by a defender which led to a penalty.

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez still can't believe it. During the fourth day of the Champions League, this Wednesday, November 6, his team conceded a largely avoidable penalty, to put it mildly. While the English were neck and neck with Bruges, defender Tyron Mings committed the irreparable.

On a harmless six-yarder at the start of the second half, the Argentinian goalkeeper put the ball back into play with a short pass towards his teammate Tyron Mings. However, against all expectations, for no reason, the English defender grabbed the ball with his hands. Logically, the referee therefore whistled a penalty, under the disillusioned gaze of all the Villans.

Penalty converted

A small careless error with big consequences since Hans Vanaken, the Belgian striker, did not let himself be asked to convert the penalty. Without any solution, Aston Villa never came back and lost by the smallest of margins (1-0).

Before today, Unai Emery's team had still not conceded a single goal in the Champions League. Even Harry Kane's Bayern Bunich failed to break the English barrier. It took an error of this ilk to deceive the vigilance of Emiliano Martinez. Aston Villa remain well positioned in the competition with 9 points from four matches.
