Press release from the NPA-l’Anticapitaliste – The ban on layoffs is urgent!
Michelin, Auchan, Airbus, Vencorex… layoff plans are intensifying. For several weeks, the automotive sector in Europe has been mobilizing against what bosses and shareholders want to present as inevitable: job cuts to restore margins in the face of international competition. Always with the same destructive logic: workers serve as adjustment variables. In France, it is notably the employees of MA France, Dumarey-Powerlidge in Strasbourg, and even Valeo who are on the front line.
Other sectors are also affected: chemicals, mass distribution, etc. Employees at the Cordemais power plant, near Nantes are mobilized as well as those of Vencorex in Isère. Auchan has just announced the elimination of 2,300 jobs and Michelin, 1,250 positions in Vannes and Cholet, where a powerful strike has just broken out.
Added to these layoff plans are Airbus and its 2,500 threatened positions, and many others like Walor, Milee, ExxonMobil… As of October 18, 2024, the CGT identified 180 layoff plans in one year[1].
In the past, these companies have benefited from tax gifts and assistance of all kinds. For years, they have monopolized public money and are now laying off workers with all their might. This is unacceptable. Michel Barnier can point his finger at the direction of Michelin and Auchan, no one is fooled. His government will support the social breakdown.
The public sector is not spared either, as in National Education where 4,000 positions will be eliminated. The Court of Auditors for its part recommends the elimination of 100,000 positions in the Territorial Civil Service.
To stop the capitalist destruction of jobs, lives and life, it is vital that these struggles converge. Private ownership of the means of production, which only serves the particular interests of a minority, is the main culprit for the ongoing social and ecological catastrophe… It is time to put an end to it. This would be a work of public health for the benefit of the majority, those who produce wealth.
In the immediate future, it becomes urgent to impose a ban on layoffs and the reconversion of jobs to produce here without polluting, so that employees decide with the population what it needs and how to produce it.
It is just as urgent that the entire social and political left, in the New Popular Front and outside, that all the union teams concerned come together to organize a central demonstration in Paris against the layoffs, against the job cuts, and against the Macron-Barnier government.
