On November 6, 2024, the Israeli military ordered residents of two neighborhoods in the southern suburbs of Beirut to immediately evacuate, citing the proximity of these areas to Hezbollah-affiliated facilities. This announcement coincides with a speech given by Naim Qassem, the new secretary general of Hezbollah.
Avichay Adraee, a spokesperson for the Israeli army, published on X (formerly Twitter) a map detailing the affected areas, accompanied by the following message: “You are located near installations and interests affiliated with Hezbollah, against which the Israel Defense Forces will act in the near future. »
This directive comes amid increased tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, particularly after the assassination of former Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah by Israeli forces. Naim Qassem, Nasrallah’s successor, recently affirmed Hezbollah’s determination to continue its resistance against Israel until acceptable ceasefire conditions are obtained.
The southern suburbs of Beirut, known as Dahiyeh, are considered a Hezbollah stronghold. These areas have been targeted by Israeli strikes on several occasions, including after similar evacuation warnings. On November 1, at least ten strikes hit these neighborhoods after calls for evacuation from the Israeli army.
Lebanese authorities condemned the actions, calling them violations of national sovereignty. Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati said the attacks demonstrate Israel’s refusal of all initiatives aimed at establishing a ceasefire.
