Who reaches the threshold of 270 electors?
Who reaches the threshold of 270 electors? This number of votes represents the absolute majority within the electoral college who will elect the president of the United States. Each state has a specific number of electors. As the states are won, the accumulation of these votes increases, for each candidate.
As a reminder, if the nearly 240 million inhabitants of the United States affected by the vote have ballots bearing the names of the candidates in the presidential election, their votes do not directly elect the tenant of the White House. The results of the votes in each state designate the 538 electors who form the electoral college. They are the ones who will vote for a name, following the long electoral process in the United States. This implies, for the candidates, to obtain the absolute majority of these votes, i.e. 270 electors. Regardless of the number of votes obtained by the candidates (the “popular vote”), the number of electoral votes obtained by state does not change.
State map of presidential election results
Where are the scores known and who wins? The interactive map below, updated as the results progress, displays the political color that came first among the two major parties in the running: the Republican Party with Donald Trump or the Democratic Party with Kamala Harris.
The map by state and number of votes in the electoral college
Remember that the number of states in which a candidate comes first says little about success in the election. In 2020, the candidate of the Democratic Party, Joe Biden, won in 26 states which allowed him to gather 306 voters, compared to 232 for Donald Trump who came first in 25 states. THE number of electors indeed depends, to a large extent, on the population of each state. The interactive map below therefore presents the result of the presidential election by state and by number of electors:
The number of state electors corresponds to the number of representatives and senators in Congress of the territory. Each state has two senators and at least one representative. The number of additional representatives then depends on the number of inhabitants. Among the telling examples, the State of New York weighs much more with its 28 electors than New Mexico and its five seats, while being significantly smaller in area.
Reminder of the seven “Swing states”
Another important element for understanding the results maps: the famous “Swing states”, key states of the election. Most states are either Democratic or Republican. Seven states stand out for having a much more uncertain vote for one or other of the candidates:Arizonathe North Carolinathe Georgiathe Michiganthe Nevadathe Pennsylvania and the Wisconsin. The outcome of the vote in these states will determine who, Kamala Harris or Donald Trump, has the most electoral votes.
State by state, the voting table
What results are known? How many seats are allocated based on results in a state? How many inhabitants does it have? The table below, updated as the results progress, allows you to consult this summary at a glance. Included are the 50 states affected by the vote in the presidential election, as well as the District of Columbia, seat of the federal capital Washington.
