An American soldier died after being injured during a mission on the temporary pier intended to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, the American army announced Tuesday.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sergeant Quandarius Davon Stanley,” said Captain Shkeila Milford-Glover, an army spokeswoman in a statement.
She did not specify the date of his death or the type of injury he suffered. Two other U.S. soldiers suffered minor non-combat injuries during this mission.
The pier, now dismantled, appeared particularly vulnerable to swell and had broken away from the shore several times due to weather conditions since its installation in May.
US President Joe Biden announced in March the establishment of this pier in Gaza in the face of severe restrictions imposed by Israel on the land delivery of humanitarian aid to the war-ravaged Palestinian territory.
