A reshuffle that displeases. Hundreds of demonstrators gathered this Tuesday evening, November 5, in Tel Aviv to denounce the dismissal of Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, according to an AFP journalist on site.
“In the midst of war, trust is more than ever required between the Prime Minister and his Minister of Defense” but “in recent months, this trust has been eroded,” Benjamin Netanyahu said in a letter addressed to Yoav Gallant, adding that he “chose to appoint Minister Israel Katz to replace him.”
The demonstrators, armed with Israeli flags and drums, blocked the main avenue of Tel Aviv and lit fires on the tracks following the announcement of the dismissal of Yoav Gallant, to demand that the Israeli government reach an agreement with Hamas to release the hostages still held in the Gaza Strip.
A sudden change
The sudden change of minister at the head of Defense “could affect the fate” of the 97 hostages still being held, the Families Forum, the main association of hostages’ relatives, said in a press release.
“We expect new Minister Israel Katz to work closely with mediators and the international community to achieve the immediate release of all hostages,” the Forum added.
In Jerusalem, Israelis gathered in front of the prime minister’s residence.
Since October 7, Israel has been at war against the Palestinian Islamist movement in Gaza and since September also against Hezbollah in Lebanon. It also responded to missile attacks against its territory carried out by Iran, which supports these two Islamist movements.
Around 60,000 people have been displaced within the country due to almost daily cross-border firefights since Hezbollah opened a front against Israel on October 8, 2023 in support of Hamas, before the situation degenerated into open war.
