En Avant Guingamp – FC Saturday: who is the favorite for the derby according to history?

Four years, nine months and one day. This is how long we had to wait to experience a new official derby between En Avant Guingamp and FC . If the EAG won the last confrontation on February 8, 2020 (2-1), in Roudourou, the two teams will meet again this Saturday, November 9, 2024 at 2 p.m. at Moustoir. In the meantime, several friendly matches allowed the two neighbors to cross paths. And in particular this summer for a Guingamp victory (2-0) and a parity score (1-1). But which club do these derbies usually go to?

Home advantage

Out of all 34 confrontations, En Avant won 18 for ten defeats and six draws. But a trend is emerging in the 21st century, that of winning at home. Over this period, Guingamp has five wins, three draws and one elimination in the Coupe de la Ligue at Roudourou.

And if some meetings were more striking than others, the Costa Rican victory of March 6, 2002 (4-3) remained in people's minds. Three crucial points which allowed, two months later, Guy Lacombe's troops to save their skin in Ligue 1 at the expense of FCL. And, of course, it is impossible to miss the success of August 24, 2013. Back among the elite of French football nine years after its relegation, Guingamp won its first three units of the season against Merlus. 2-0 final score thanks to two goals from Mustapha Yatabaré.

Crippling setbacks…

Like Guingamp in Roudourou, Lorient is more used to winning the derby at Moustoir. Still in the 21st century, the FCL won seven of the ten matches there for a single draw and two successes for the EAG. En Avant thus often returned to Côtes-d’Armor with morale at zero. This was particularly the case, in Ligue 1, after this rout of October 27, 2001 (2-6) or after that of August 30, 2014 (0-4). Without forgetting this frustrating setback in added time (3-4) while Jocelyn Gourvennec's protégés had a two-goal lead the following season.

…And some nice surprises

But these derbies at Moustoir also sometimes had some nice surprises in store. Like this first round of the Coupe de la Ligue, in 2004-2005, where goals from Cédric Fauré and Milovan Sikimic qualified Yvon Pouliquen's Guingampais. As for the EAG's latest success on the Morbihannais meadow, it dates back to the 2019-2020 season. Just relegated to Ligue 2 at the time, En Avant won in the final minutes after an own goal from Julien Laporte. And, on Saturday, the Rouge et Noir could see themselves repeating this kind of nasty trick on Merlus.
