What future for beach? The Lac de la Cavayère traders' association supports its demands at town hall

Faced with the worrying drop in the water level of Lake Cavayère, traders from the site created an association which was received at the town hall on Monday November 4 afternoon. According to the operators concerned, a poor interpretation of the legal texts was made, to justify the opening of a reserve valve under the guise of biodiversity.

If we must not forget that it is Agglo which manages the Cavayère lake, more commonly called “Carcassonne beach” and not the City, the future of this tourist site remains worrying for the operators who have been banking on the place for several years. As a reminder, the concern comes from this reserve valve placed below the dam, and letting ten liters of water pass per second, inexorably emptying the lake.

The drop in water level causes numerous algae to appear.

The impact is social, but also economic, ecological and land… With a lake which today shows a drop of three meters in its water level, and twice as much by the summer of 2025 if this valve remains open .

Monday, November 4, it is in this context that the association of traders of Lac de la Cavayère was received at the town hall by the first deputy Isabelle Chesa, the deputy for the environment Arnaud Albarel, and the deputy for sports Yazid Laredj. “For the moment, it is very complicated to move forward after this first meeting, as long as we have not seen the Agglo”underlines the president of the association of traders of Lake Cavayère Clément Planel, also manager of the water ski lift. And to continue: “We are all lovers of this site and have done enormous in-depth work to demonstrate that this type of lake fed by a stream does not fall within the criteria put forward to justify the opening of this valve, ad vitam aeternam. “

We are not concerned by this reserve flow…

In the Aquaviva park sector, the drop in water level is obvious.

Manager of the Aquaviva park, Cyrille Doray talks about “a poor assessment of the legal texts, because the lake is not fed by a watercourse but by the runoff from a stream which is dry for part of the year. In this case, we are not not affected by this reserve flow…” A file with all the legal texts on the subject was thus put together by the association of lake traders, and handed over to the deputy mayors of Carcassonne concerned.

It is unacceptable that the lake is emptying!

On the side of the City, which only manages police power on Lake Cavayère, Yazid Laredj explains that “We will not leave the situation like this, because the lake is an incredible asset for us. We are not going to let up the pressure!” Last October 19 in our columns, the first deputy mayor of Carcassonne responsible for town planning, Isabelle Chesa, already expressed serious concerns about Lake Cavayère: “We are seized of this problem, where the future of the lake is at stake. It is unacceptable that it is emptying… We care about biodiversity downstream, but do we care about biodiversity upstream !” Also in mid-October, Mayor Gérard Larrat sent a letter to the president of Carcassonne Agglo Régis Banquet, as well as to the prefect of Aude Christian Pouget, in order to quickly find a solution. To date, there has been no return.

In the meantime, it is this Thursday, November 7 that the association of merchants of Lac de la Cavayère must be received in the premises of Carcassonne Agglo: “We hope that President Régis Banquet will be present to hear our arguments…”
