The Veterans Park cenotaph will once again be adorned with flowers and wreaths in memory of the region’s soldiers who fell on the fields of honor during two world wars and the Korean War.
The Remembrance Day ceremony will take place on Saturday, November 9, at 1:30 p.m., in Lac-Mégantic. Organized by Branch 136 of the Canadian Legion, the commemoration will begin with a parade starting from the Legion premises, rue Millette, to the cenotaph at Veterans Park. A ceremony in memory of the fallen soldiers will then take place in the presence of various dignitaries.
“The service and sacrifices of members of the Canadian Armed Forces during various conflicts have helped define and shape our country. We all have a duty to remember these men and women, particularly this year which marks the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings,” recalled the member for Mégantic-L’Érable and deputy leader in the House of the Official opposition, Luc Berthold.
The MP invites the citizens of the MRC du Granit to join him during this ceremony. “It is important to take this time to remember courage and honor the memory of Canadians who fell in battle defending our freedom. This is why I make it my duty to collaborate in this ceremony.”
Remembrance Day is officially observed each year on November 11. In the constituency of Mégantic-L’Érable, in order to be able to hold ceremonies in three different sectors, with a larger number of participants available, Saturday, November 9 is preferred for the Granite sector and the MRC de l’Érable, at Plessisville, where the gathering is scheduled for 10 a.m. For the MRC des Appalaches, the ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, November 10, at 1:30 p.m., in front of the cenotaph on Notre-Dame Ouest, in Thetford Mines.
