Garmin launches Q4 update of its X40 Edge cycling computer

Garmin has announced a Q4 update for the Edge 540, Edge 840 and Edge 1040 for bikes. The software, currently deployed in beta, brings a series of features, improvements and bug fixes to the devices.

The way X40 Edge series devices connect to a PC has been changed, with an update that allows them to use Media Transfer Protocol (MTP). Garmin claims this improves file security. This change comes with an unusual update process. X40 Edge users are advised to install beta version 24.54 by first going to Main Menu > System > About > Check for Updates and then letting your device reboot. Your device will then be updated to use the MTP protocol. You can then follow the same procedure for beta 25.17 to benefit from other new features and bug fixes.

The 25.17 beta changelog indicates that the electronic shift sound has been restored and the old Functional Power Threshold (FTP) test has been removed. Lactate threshold estimates are now automatic, provided you record a heart rate during your workout. Additionally, a new confirmation message appears when you successfully pair an altimeter manually. Below is the full list of changes in beta 25.17 for the Edge 540, Edge 840, and Edge 1040 cycling computers.
