The 2006 World Cup final between the French team and Italy, sadly marked by the expulsion of Zinedine Zidane, continues to haunt many minds. And former cyclist Jérôme Pineau, interviewed live on Sunday in Les Grandes Gueules on RMC Sport, also indicated that he would never forgive Zidane for this error.
While Marco Materazzi recently spoke behind the scenes of his legendary encounter with Zinedine Zidane in the final of the 2006 World Cupthis famous headbutt delivered by the French player and the expulsion which followed continue to be talked about 18 years later. Some people criticize in particular Zidane of having only thought of himself without worrying about the consequences of such a gesture and the outcome it would cause for this final, and this is particularly the case of the former cyclist Jerome Pineau.
“He did this for himself”
Interviewed on Sunday live on RMC SportIn The Big Mouths, Pineau reproaches Zinedine Zidane for having approached this 2006 final with a strong feeling of individualism: “ I still have that in the way, with this love that I have for Zidane, like many people, this last match where he takes everything for himself. This is where I still have bitterness towards this character. This image there… For me, in his face, when he enters this final, he says to himself: 'it's my match, whatever the outcome, it's my match'. It starts with the panenka, it's hot potato. He can also mess up, he's a genius, it's legendary, but in the end he did it for himself.”he explains.
“I will never forgive him”
« I haven't forgiven him. Absolutely not, ever. Everything else when you tell me Zidane… I had the chance to see him play indoors in Limoges, I was like a kid when I was 35 years old. For me, he's someone I don't even want to talk to because he's above, he's a god to me. But in this match, I will never, ever forgive him », continues Pineau on Zidane. The message got through…
