Silent Hill 2 Remakea title designed by the Bloober Team, is undoubtedly the commercial success that the license needed to get back on track. Despite its technical problems, Konami's game sold a million copies in three days, making it the best launch in the franchise.
The franchise has always been accustomed to the inclusion of easter eggs and other secrets (more or less stupid, remember the UFO endings), and this remake was no exception to the rule. A particular tough riddle was unraveled on November 3, 2024. The complete solution to the riddle was posted by user DaleRobnison on Reddit. During the game, you can collect various Polaroids, on which more or less cryptic inscriptions are noted. In order to solve the problem, you must count the number of salient elements in the images (number of bullet holes, light spots or others), and find the letter corresponding to this number in the inscription located under the photo . For example, the first photo shows six windows and is titled “SO MANY PEOPLE HERE!”. We must therefore look for the sixth letter of this sentence, the “Y”. You must apply this method to the 26 photos that you can collect in-game to find the final sentence: “YOU’VE BEEN HERE FOR TWO DECADES”either “You have been here for two decades”.

The resolution of this puzzle was validated by the game's creative director, Mateusz Lenart, in a post published on X/Twitter. The latter also affirmed that the team had questioned the complexity of the message.“We wanted to keep everything subtle”he explains, confirming that the photos and their clues were carefully integrated so as not to reveal the secret too easily. A roundabout way of saying it was a hair-pulling problem.
“I knew it wouldn't stay hidden for long! (There was a theory in our company that the puzzle might be too difficult) I really wanted to make it subtle when I was painting these pictures…I think the timing was right Couldn't be better for you to solve this problem!
The solution to this enigma makes canon the theory of the time loop of Silent Hill 2. According to it, James would be stuck in eternal purgatory, and would thus be condemned to endlessly relive his past sins. This also sheds light on the message that Masahiro Ito (artist and designer of monsters from the first three Silent Hill) had posted on social media in 2023, saying that all ends of Silent Hill 2 are hot. As James relives these events over and over, all the outcomes are therefore canonical, since they all took place.
We should have a new round of announcements concerning the saga Silent Hill within a few days and/or weeks, since Konami has stated that a conference on the future of the franchise should be held shortly.
