Hungarian right-wing populist Prime Minister Viktor Orban supports the American Republican candidate whom he defines as “pro-peace” in Ukraine. His election would give more weight to his policy within the European Union.
Seen from Hungary, or at least from his government, Donald Trump must be elected because it is an opportunity for Europe and for peace. And if he is elected, Europe will have to rethink its support for Ukraine, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban declared this Sunday, November 3, believing that the continent “will not be able to bear the burdens of war alone.”
The Hungarian Prime Minister supports the former Republican President of the United States in his duel against Democratic candidate Kamala Harris during the American election this Tuesday, November 5.
What kind of peace in Ukraine?
Viktor Orban opposes military aid to Ukraine and has made clear that he believes Donald Trump shares his views and will negotiate a peace deal.
“We (in Europe) have to realize that if there is a pro-peace president in America, which I believe in…, if what we expect happens and America becomes pro-peace peace, then Europe cannot remain pro-war,” Viktor Orban said. Yes, but what kind of peace does Hungary's populist and nationalist prime minister see? While Europe worries about the impact of the US election result on the war in Ukraine and the security of the continent, Viktor Orban has already angered Brussels because of his close ties to Russia and his opposition for aid to Ukraine.
The latter will be high on the agenda of the meeting of European leaders to be held in Budapest next week, he said, while Hungary presides for a few more months. Strengthened by this position, Viktor Orban has been blocking for more than a year the allocation of 6.6 billion euros intended to reimburse member states for the military aid they provide to Ukraine, recalls Le Monde. He also slowed down for weeks negotiations on the payment of financial aid of 50 billion euros to Ukraine until 2027, finally granted last February.
Anti-immigration Europe is also pro-Trump, even pro-Putin
Hand in hand therefore with Donald Trump as with Putin, last July, Viktor Orban announced that his team was helping the collaborators of the American Republican candidate to develop policies on families and immigration.
Orban's government has implemented one of the toughest anti-migrant policies in the world. In this anti-immigration European nebula supporting Donald Trump, let us cite Slovakia and its Prime Minister Robert Fico, Italy and its leader Georgia Meloni, as well as far-right parties such as the German AfD, Vox in Spain or the Rally national in France, according to Euro News.
