SPAIN – After six days of drama and flooding, residents of the Valencia region are at their wits' end. As you can see in the video at the top of the article, it was the royal couple who paid the price. This Sunday, November 3, while King Felipe VI of Spain and his wife, Queen Letizia, were on an official visit to Paiporta, mud and various objects were thrown in their faces, something never seen before in the entire world. history of the Spanish monarchy.
The sovereigns arrived shortly after midday in Paiporta, a town of around 25,000 inhabitants located in the suburbs of Valencia, one of the most bereaved cities in the country, while the floods left at least 217 dead in total. They were accompanied by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and the president of the region Carlos Mazón. During a very heated encounter with the crowd, they tried to talk to the residents and calm their anger, but the situation was such that they ended up leaving the area.
The anger of residents is mainly directed against the right-wing president of the Valencia region, Carlos Mazón, and the socialist Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez. The crowd chanted “Mazón resign!” »« how many deaths? » or even “ assassins ! ». After this hostile crowd bath, Carlos Mazón also wrote about : “I understand the social indignation and I of course stay to receive it. It is my political and moral obligation”while greeting “the attitude of the exemplary King”.
For his part, Pedro Sanchez also said he understood “anguish and suffering” victims of the floods earlier this week, but condemned “all types of violence” after the incidents of the day, however qualified as “some absolutely marginal moments”.
Residents of the Valencia region accuse the authorities of having abandoned them to their fate. Many transport and telecommunications infrastructures were destroyed or put out of service by the torrential rains. In many communities, piles of cars and muddy debris still litter the roadways. Residents organize themselves to provide themselves with water, electricity, food and repair the damage.
