“Units of the Center troop group liberated the village of Vishneve following offensive operations,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in its daily report.
The day before, the Russian army had already claimed the capture of two new villages in eastern Ukraine, where its soldiers have been gaining ground since the start of the year against fewer and less armed Ukrainian troops.
The city of Pokrovsk, one of the main objectives of Russian forces in this sector of the front, is an important hub for the Ukrainian army’s logistics, connecting several fortresses in Donbass by road.
Russian troops are now within a few kilometers of the town, which is also home to a major mine of coke coal, a mineral essential for producing steel for military needs.
The Russian army took 478 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in October, a record since the first weeks of the conflict in March 2022, according to an AFP analysis of data from the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW). ).
