A fire broke out on Friday, November 1 in a sunflower seed silo on a farm located on Route des Métairies, in Chassors. The disaster mobilized a large rescue team, requiring specific interventions to prevent any spread.

A sunflower seed silo engulfed in flames

According to La Charente Libre, when they arrived on site, the firefighters noticed that the fire had started in one of the two 700-ton silos of the 700 m² agricultural building. Although the structure only contained 15 tonnes of sunflower seeds, the risk of the fire resuming was real. To contain the fire, emergency services immediately deployed two water hoses and proceeded to empty the silo, allowing deep watering.

Coordinated mobilization of local barracks

Twenty-four firefighters from the Jarnac, Cognac, Rouillac and Angoulême barracks took turns to control the fire, ensuring continuous operation until around 9 p.m. The intervention made it possible to secure the entire site.

Exclusion of chemical risk

Chemical risk specialists were also dispatched to the scene to assess any possible danger linked to smoke or burning products. Fortunately, they quickly ruled out any toxicity, guaranteeing the safety of local residents and rescue teams.
