Wood, fuel or electric: which heating method will be the cheapest this winter?

The observation is clear: winter promises to be gentle on the wallet of the retiree met by our team. “This winter, it will cost us 1000 euros for heating compared to last year when it cost us 1500 euros”explains Robert in the TF1 report at the top of this article. He measured this drop in prices from his first delivery, a tonne of wood pellets to complete his winter stock. “It’s still not bad, I hope they will hold up like that,” he relishes.

More affordable pellets, just like gas. This is the good news this November compared to last year. Let’s take the example of a household: for four people, in a 100 m² house heated with gas, this will save at least 40 euros on the bill for the month of November. Among the other winners this winter, we find those who heat themselves with oil. The price per 1000 liters has decreased by an average of 228 euros compared to last year.

On the other hand, winter promises to be harsher for those who depend on electric heating. Even if his fireplace has a charm that he appreciates, it is not enough to heat Jean-Pierre’s entire house. In fact, it is mainly its electric radiators which allow it to maintain a temperature, currently around 19 degrees. With increasingly hefty bills, Jean-Pierre is one of the losers this winter. “What I paid to EDF went from 2405 euros in 2023 to 2800 and a few euros in 2024“, he notes at the microphone of TF1, “so a significant increase which I cannot necessarily explain since my consumption would have rather decreased”.

Jean-Pierre actually consumed less, but his bill increased by 400 euros, and it’s not over, because the network usage costs should be higher in November. The reduction in electricity bills is currently only expected from next February.
