He was actively wanted for the double murder of a mayor and a retired police officer: the lifeless body of a hunter found in a forest

Past conflicts linked to hunting would be the main motives for the crimes of which he is suspected.

The man suspected of the double murder, which occurred in Austria on Monday October 28, was found dead this Saturday November 2 afternoon in a forest by agents of the Upper Austrian Rapid Intervention Group (SIG). Everything indicates that he committed suicide, police said at a press conference today, according to local media.

“He was identified by his fingerprints,” said Gottfried Mitterlehner, head of the state criminal police. An autopsy of the body was ordered.

Roland Drexler, 56, was suspected of having shot a mayor of the Fraunschlag region (municipality of Altenfelden) and a former hunting director and retired police officer with a targeted bullet in the head.

He was the subject of a large-scale manhunt. According to the Austrian police, past conflicts linked to hunting are the main motives for the crimes since the victims had previously reported the suspect for illegal practices.

With no criminal record, he was considered “extremely dangerous” and reportedly carried three weapons with him, two long guns and a pistol that he legally owned. His car was found Friday October 1 near the first crime scene. The police have received a total of 400 reports concerning him in recent days.
