What is the day you are most “chance” to die? INSEE, in its latest study published this Wednesday, October 30, analyzed data concerning the number of deaths in France.
If 639,300 deaths were recorded in 2023, this is the January 3 which wins the prize for the deadliest day. From 2004 to 2023, the average number of deaths (1900) is 19% higher than the average number of daily deaths over the same period (1600). “ January 3 is a winter day, which follows the end-of-year holidays. The desire to spend these holidays with loved ones, as well as the desire to reach a new year could delay the onset of death for people at the end of life and partly explain this peak. In addition, this period corresponds to a resumption of scheduled surgical operations. », analyzes INSEE.
On the contrary, the August 15, date of the Assumption, is the least deadly day. There were only 1,410 deaths on average during this day, a number 12% lower than the daily average observed between 2004 and 2023. A statistic which can be explained by the fact that it is a day summer holiday, two times when the number of deaths is lower than average.
