TIRA, ISRAEL (Reuters) -Rockets fired from Lebanon injured 11 people in central Israel on Saturday when one hit a house, according to Israeli emergency services.
Fighting has intensified in recent weeks between Israeli forces and Lebanese Hezbollah, and hopes of a US-led ceasefire have faded in recent days.
“We went out and saw dust, [il y avait] screams of children, screams of women and everyone headed towards the house that was hit,” said Qasim Mohab, a resident of the rocket-hit town of Tira. “We were able to evacuate and save those who were inside the house and, thank God, we were lucky that there were no deaths.”
Israel's ambulance service said 11 people were injured by shrapnel. Air raid sirens continued to sound in northern Israel as rocket fire from Lebanon continued, according to the army.
On Friday, Lebanon's health ministry said 52 people were killed in Israeli strikes on more than a dozen towns in the Baalbek region, home to UNESCO-listed Roman ruins.
Iran-backed Hezbollah began firing rockets into Israel in support of its Palestinian ally Hamas, a day after the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel by Hamas militants, who killed some 1,200 people and brought 251 hostages back to Gaza, according to Israeli counts.
More than 43,000 Palestinians have been killed since then in the Israeli offensive in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run enclave's health ministry, and at least 2,897 people have been killed in Lebanon, the health ministry said. Lebanese Friday.
According to Israeli authorities, 71 people in Israel and the occupied territories were killed by Hezbollah fire.
