Hamza Mahmoudi appeared this week at the Longueuil courthouse.

The authorities hold him responsible for the death of Mehdi Abazari Torghabeh on the morning of June 30.

True to form, the 75-year-old man got up before his wife to get ready and go for a walk.

“He was very fit and absolutely wanted to do his 20,000 steps a day,” he mentioned to Journal his daughter, Maryam.

His daughter, Maryam Abazari Torghabeh, his wife, Farideh Davari, and his son, Alireza Abazari Torghabeh, were inconsolable a few days after the tragedy.

No chance

Mehdi Abazari Torghabeh, who was portrayed by his family as a “quiet force”, however, never returned home to reunite with his wife of 48 years.

He was traveling on the cycle path on Boulevard du Quartier, about three kilometers from his house, when he was allegedly hit head-on by the accused.

According to what the police have said, speed is a factor in this case. This is why the young man allegedly lost control of the vehicle.

The damage caused by the red Hyundai partly showed the route taken by Hamza Mahmoudi, who had finished his race in a cedar hedge.

The resident of La Prairie, in Montérégie, is currently at liberty, but is subject to several conditions. He returns to court next January to undergo his preliminary hearing.

Troubles with the law

Hamza Mahmoudi was arrested twice last year in connection with investigations into vehicle thefts, reported The Journal.

He would also have had links with a network which works in particular on the South Shore of Montreal.

He pleaded guilty to reduced charges of possession of property obtained by crime, obstructing a peace officer and possession of burglary tools. He got away with two years of community service.

The police had established a security perimeter at the end of the tragedy.

According to our sources, the young man managed to convince the court that he had gotten his act together.

Furthermore, he has been arrested twice since 2023 for speeding, while he was driving at almost twice the permitted limit.
