For the 10th anniversary of the Day of Night in the municipality, intended to raise awareness among the greatest number of Sigeans about the harmful effects of light pollution on biodiversity, a short 5 km night walk was offered by the municipality, supervised and secure by The Walkers of Sigean.
“A large number of animal species live at night and lighting the night disrupts their way of life and endangers the sustainability of these species. Migratory birds need full darkness because they find their way using the brightness of the stars “, explained Pierre Santori, elected official for the environment and sustainable development, before departure to the hundred or so people in walking shoes, equipped with headlamps, gathered on the Place de la Libération in front of the town hall. As they passed, the technical services turned off all the public lighting and Jean-Marie Sanchis, a Roquefortois keen on astronomy and a supervisor approved by the Federation of Hikers, shared with them his passion for observing the starry sky.
A pleasant 1.5 hour evening walk which brought together the people of Sigean outside their homes and which ended with sharing a country buffet offered by the municipality.
