After experimenting with paid meals in economy class, the airline Air France is moving up a gear: A sharp increase in prices on all its flights. The surge in the Solidarity Tax on plane tickets (TSBA) has happened there. The French government, which is forced to plug the gaping holes in public finances to avoid the acceleration of the dangerous slope, has decided to wring out almost everyone. Plane tickets will not be spared…
The TSBA will increase and not a little, this additional cost the customers of the national carrier will have to pay. The turn of the screw, which awaits official validation from the French Parliament, has already been grafted into the prices for Air France flights scheduled from 2025. The government of Michel Barnier, in dire straits, is heading towards tripling the amount of this tax, imagine the effect on ticket prices.
The travelers will toast. Surcharges will vary depending on destination and class of travel. For a domestic or European flight in economy class, you will have to pay 2.63 euros to 9.50 euros more. But this is nothing compared to the increases for long-haul flights and higher classes, the tax could even rise to 120 euros for a flight in Business and La Première cabins and a distance greater than 5,500 km.
Obviously regular passengers to destinations such as Algeria will not be spared, their expenses will increase significantly. The French carrier cites financial imperatives to justify changing its prices even before the National Assembly makes a decision. Air France defends itself by saying that it is thinking ahead to avoid financial setbacks, but that was not enough to dry up the flow of criticism…
Union representatives condemn this increase before Parliament's approval and denounce the lack of consultation with partners. Worse: these increases do not only concern Air France, all airlines operating from France will be wiped out. Operators in the sector are already worried about the repercussions of this measure on the competitiveness of French companies.
The plane could pay very dearly for this surcharge, compared to other means of transport. And then there are the arm wrestling in perspective. If companies with a strong presence in France such as Tunisair, Air Algérie and Royal Air Maroc (RAM) are impacted, it will make noise. No one is unaware of the execrable nature of relations between Paris and Algiers since President Emmanuel Macron chose his side, Morocco. But even with Rabat it will not be easy, after a diplomatic quarrel which lasted almost 3 years and has only just been buried.
