Typhoon Kong-rey that hit Taiwan caused widespread destruction in just a few hours.
Significant damage
This Friday, November 1, rescuers are working to Taiwan to deal with the consequences of typhon Kong-rey. It was one of the most powerful storms to hit the island in recent decades. According to the Central Emergency Operations Center (CEOC), at least two people died and 515 were injured.
The storm began Thursday afternoon, with gusts reaching 184 km/h and torrential rain. It caused floods, landslides and uprooted many trees.
Casualties and rescue operations
A 48-year-old motorcyclist has died after a power pole fell in Taipei. A 56-year-old woman also lost her life when a tree fell on her vehicle in Nantou County. Four people are still missing after going hunting in the mountains. Czech hikers, stranded in Taroko Park, were rescued on Friday. When leaving Taiwan towards China, Kong-rey has weakened. The typhoon has become a strong tropical storm, according to the Central Meteorological Administration.
Reopening of businesses
In Taiwan, activities and classes have resumed, while shops and restaurants are open again. However, nearly 100,000 homes are still without power, and 191 flights have been canceled. In addition, ferry and train connections remain suspended. Pan Li-chu, a restaurateur from Taipei, testified: “The typhoon was really powerful.” Kong-rey is the third typhoon to hit Taiwan since July, when tropical storms are common.
