Two chicken coops in Saint-Nazaire-d'Acton, in Montérégie, were razed by flames on October 30.

Firefighters were alerted around 4 a.m. by a worker who received a heat alert in a work space used for storing and loading eggs. When they arrived, they found that the flames had already spread with great vigor to the two adjacent buildings, helped by strong winds, reports Richard Hébert, fire chief at the Saint-Nazaire-d'Fire Prevention Department. Acton. “There was nothing we could do to save the birds. It was crazy steep. A fire like that is the first time we’ve seen that in Saint-Nazaire! » he exclaims.

Several fire teams from neighboring municipalities were called in for reinforcements. In total, 85 firefighters from 15 barracks fought the flames for nearly 12 hours. “We managed to cool two propane tanks to avoid an explosion,” says Chief Hébert.

He reports that the fire appears to have been caused by an air compressor that overheated in the workspace, although this remains to be confirmed, he says. The two buildings, which belong to the Boire et Frères group, are a total loss.
