Stars of the economy 2024: our complete file
The 2024 Stars of the Economy will take place on Thursday, November 14 at the Palais Beaumont in Pau. Until then, our file will be enriched each week with the “Matinales de l'entreprises” broadcasts and you will gradually discover the finalists in the different categories.
If you had to summarize what Teréga is in two sentences, which ones would you choose?
Teréga is a natural gas transport and storage company. We are at the interconnection of Spain and we transit gas flows between the north and the south of Europe, in both directions.
How are you approaching the transition to more sustainable energy sources?
It has already been many years since we began this energy transition! In 2017, we connected our first biomethane unit to our transport network. We are very proud to sponsor this “Energy and low-carbon transition” category because it is entirely consistent with our ambition to support the change in our energy sector and the development of our activities and our professions towards this transition.
Can you give us other concrete examples?
We already transport and store renewable gas. Our network has ten biomethane units connected throughout the country. In 2025, there will be four more. And by 2050, our ambition – and it is a national ambition – is to have 100% green gas in our networks. There is obviously biomethane, I spoke about it: it is a dynamic activity in our territory – we have 125 projects registered to eventually request a connection, that is a figure for June 2024, in New Zealand alone. Aquitaine. It's huge: it represents approximately 13-14% of the territory's methanization potential. This is a first major axis of development. The second axis is hydrogen: we are involved in a certain number of transnational projects. We have built partnerships with our colleagues at GRT Gaz, our French counterpart for example, but also the Spanish operator Enagás or OGE, a German gas company. The idea is to bring green hydrogen from southern Europe to northern Europe, and in particular to Germany. We are committed to the Bar-Mar project to have a pipeline that will go from Barcelona to Marseille and which is part of a European corridor. This project is supported not only by the French authorities, but also by the European authorities.
So the current infrastructure is not enough?
There are two things. First of all, there is the adaptation of our network to new gases and we are actively working on this. So, we currently have a project near Bordeaux to transform a gas pipeline to transport hydrogen tomorrow. And there are other projects with new 100% hydrogen infrastructure – this is the case of the Bar-Mar project. Another project we are working on: HySoW, like Hydrogène Sud-Ouest, which aims to connect our territory to the need for hydrogen, with either local production or production that would come from the South or from the Atlantic coast or the Mediterranean coast. In this project, the idea is to reuse existing pipes: we have to carry out tests, we must ensure that the conversion of these pipes is possible to accommodate hydrogen tomorrow in our current pipes.
What is the place of innovation at Teréga?
Innovation is at the heart of our strategy. To face the challenges of the energy transition, we created a subsidiary called Teréga Solutions, with four “business units”, one around biomethane, one around hydrogen, one around the CO2 sector and another around “multi-energy” and digital. In the latter, for example, we are implementing intelligent network systems, with efficient management tools and energy efficiency. Innovation thus aims to respond to the challenges of energy transition, but will also bring an advantage to the economic development of our territory.
“At Teréga, we have been engaged in this energy transition for many years! » Michel Boche
