Fuel prices fell again last week

In summary

The average price of a liter of diesel fell below the symbolic threshold of €1.60 last week.

The two main fuels are down, at €1.5977 and €1.7032 per liter.

The economic slowdown in China, the largest importer of oil, is weighing down prices, which are now falling.

The risk of a conflagration in the Middle East between Israel and Iran raised fears of a surge in oil and fuel prices. It is the opposite which is observed for the moment. The fact that the Israeli army did not attack Iran's energy production capacities reassured the markets and led to a fall in prices.

As a result, the prices of the main fuels sold in remain at the very low level they experienced this summer.

Every Monday, the Ministry of Ecological Transition publishes on its website the average price per liter of different automobile fuels, according to declarations from French service stations. This is indeed an average: some stations are below, others above. This data is calculated from Friday to Friday.

The prices published on Monday October 28, 2024 therefore show the average of prices observed from September 18 to October 25. The two main fuels, SP95-E10 and diesel, sold for €1.5977 and €1.7032 per liter respectively.

The two best-selling fuels are even down slightly: 1.7 cents less for SP95-E10, 2.1 cents for diesel. Both are approaching the levels observed at the time of the start of the school year, a level which had not been reached since the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2022.

A lasting trend?

Oil prices plunge at the start of the week, reportsAgence France Presseafter the air attack carried out by Israel on Iran which spared the country's energy sites. The market is once again focusing on the imbalance between abundant production and weakening demand for black gold, which is pushing prices down.

The economic slowdown in China, the world's largest oil importer, is weighing down prices. The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts a slowdown in global demand growth in 2025.

For motorists, the counterpart is fuel which remains cheaper.
