Rain of gold at Michiels in Bruges

Rob Michiels, as usual, shouted the entire sale, in three languages. Aside from two interruptions, he ensured the atmosphere in the room, which kind spies told us was busy and dynamic. It must be said that the house is not very big. On the other hand, the windows were. And full of rare things, often worth between €2,000 and €5,000, or even double that.

Malcolm de Chazal, the quest for a lost Paradise

We strongly advise you to check the auctions for these Chinese pieces which often seem common, almost innocuous when it comes to certain plates or teapots, but which, when faced with amateurs, turn out to be pearls. This is to say that, despite a good 20% withdrawals, the sale went very well and that the estimates were often shaken up, even though they were already solid. Note that the fees are set at 30%.

We published this very pretty tea bowl, decorated with golden leaf, last week. It sold for €13,000, excluding costs, like the other figures cited below. Estimates ranged from €15,000 to €25,000.

Imperial bowls

A little earlier, the room offered a vase from the Song period, of the Longquan type, 15.5 cm high. It was announced that in Hong Kong, Christie’s had sold a similar piece in 2018 for 3,220,000 local dollars. Here, estimates ranged from €1,500 to €2,500. After a long bidding battle, Rob Michiels’ hammer fell to €28,000 plus fees. The same price was obtained for a rare globular jar from the famille rose, depicting a young woman and two children playing. The lot was estimated between €15,000 and €25,000, which means that the experts in the room first defend their depositors and play the competitive game less. Just before, we offered a vase from the same pink family, 38 cm high and depicting a warrior on a horse. The lot was expected to fetch between €1,500 and €2,500. It was sold for €5,000. The highest estimates, set very widely between €20,000 and €40,000, were placed on a pair of small bowls 8 cm high, decorated with roosters. Of imperial provenance, owned by a Belgian collector, it was sold for €42,000, plus 30% costs.
