: the Voltigeurs condemned to win their last match

SOCCER. The Cégep de Drummondville team chose the wrong moment to experience its worst performance of the season on Sunday in Saint-Lambert.

At the end of a one-sided duel, the Voltigeurs (3-4) suffered a tough 43-7 defeat against the Champlain College Cavaliers (5-2). If Michaël Robin’s squad remains in the race to obtain a place giving access to the elimination tournament in the south-west section of division 3, it is now condemned to win its last match of the season.

Obviously determined to avenge the 51-42 failure suffered at the start of the regular season, the Cavaliers started the match with the knife between their teeth. After scoring a touchdown on their first two offensive sequences, the locals widened the gap to 36-0 before the end of the first half.

“It’s quite simply a match to forget,” said Michaël Robin. We played our worst game of the year. I think we showed far too much resilience, in the sense that we accepted our fate.”

“We are capable of playing against anyone, but we saw today that the slightest thing that begins to doubt us, it seems like we freeze. It seems like we just don’t want to play, that we’re just not there,” added the Voltigeurs pilot.

Coming in relief of veteran Maxime Beaudoin, rookie quarterback Aymerick Bélanger demonstrated his know-how at the end of the game.

“Aymerick protected the ball well and made good decisions. It was a good outing on his part,” observed Michaël Robin.

In the defeat, Jérôme Blanchet scored the Voltigeurs’ only touchdown on a short run in the fourth quarter. During the match, the Drummondville defense lost the services of Maxime Houle and Tristan Lambert.

“It’s nothing serious at the moment. It was more precautionary measures,” explained Michaël Robin.

In the Cavaliers camp, quarterback Emerson Peterkin threw touchdown passes to receivers Emyl Grégoire (2) and Nicolas Tétreault. Emyl Grégoire also became the first player to cross the 1,000 receiving yards plateau this season. Running backs Tishawn Gordon (2) and Jayden Ralph also scored majors.

By virtue of the 48-41 loss of the Vulkins of the Cégep de Victoriaville (3-4) against the Électriks du Cégep de Shawinigan of the Cégep de Shawinigan (3-4), Sunday, at the Yvon-Paré stadium, three teams, including the Voltigeurs , end up with an identical file. Only two of them will advance to the playoff tournament in the southwest section.

The Voltigeurs will close their regular season by facing the Électriks next Sunday, starting at 1 p.m., at the Marchand sports complex. The winner of this game will ensure access to the elimination tournament. Earlier this season, Shawinigan defeated Drummondville 28-26.

“We have to feel a sense of urgency, that this rank belongs to us. We must play to the height of our talent. For that, we have to believe in ourselves. We are capable of beating Shawinigan. The guys just have to believe in it,” summarized Michaël Robin.

Speaking on behalf of the Drummond Football Boosters organization, Laurent Proulx reiterated his confidence in the team. “Last year at this point, we were 1-6. There, there are 3-4 of us. We still have one game to play next week against Shawinigan. We have to take this slap in the face and convert it into rage at the effort to finish the season strong.”
