Israeli army investigates death of Hezbollah fighter captured in South Lebanon

The Israeli army announced on Saturday that it had launched an investigation into the death of a Hezbollah member captured in recent days in South Lebanon, Haaretz reported.

According to Israeli Channel 12, the death occurred while the captive was “detained in Lebanon” by the Israeli army. Soldiers suspected of being involved in the death of the prisoner were summoned for questioning, before studying the possibility of using violence.

On Sunday, the Israeli army announced the capture of a first fighter from the Shiite party, as part of its ground offensive in South Lebanon. On Tuesday, she broadcast an extract from an interrogation, in captivity, of this man, with his face uncovered, and announced that he had captured three others. All were taken prisoner, according to the army, after the discovery of the group’s tunnels in South Lebanon.

According to channel 12, the detainee who died in captivity had been captured “in a tunnel, with ammunition” and he had “opened fire on soldiers of the Golani brigade”, deployed in South Lebanon.

Commenting on the opening of an investigation into the death of the prisoner, the Israeli Minister of National Security, the ultra-nationalist Itamar Ben-Gvir, denounced “a shame and a dishonor”. “Unfortunately, some within the army still do not know who the enemy is,” he criticized. “Our soldiers, who risk their lives to ensure the safety of Israeli citizens, deserve all the support they can get.” A lawyer representing the suspected soldiers, for his part, considered it “contemptible to summon our soldiers for questioning, while they are risking their lives”.
