“I don’t want anything to do with it”: a man declared dead would have “opened his eyes” when donating his organs, he ultimately survives

the essential
In 2021, TJ Hoover overdosed and was declared brain dead after suffering a cardiac arrest. His family decides to disconnect his artificial respirator. She then learns that he is volunteering to donate his organs. But during the operation, nothing goes as planned, the man struggles and it finally appears that he is alive. Retelling of a barely believable story.

This is a story that we thought could only exist in films. As reported by the American media NPR, cited by BFMTV, in 2021, TJ Hoover, a 36-year-old American, overdosed. Rushed to Baptist Health Richmond (Kentucky) hospital, he suffered a cardiac arrest and was declared brain dead by doctors.

The next day, his family made the decision to disconnect his artificial respirator. They then learn that TJ had registered on the organ donor list. According to the procedure, he then undergoes examinations without anything abnormal being noticed.

It was at this moment that his sister, Donna Rhorer, who was nearby, noticed that he “opened his eyes” and began to “follow his gaze” at those around him. The doctors quickly reassured her: these were reflexes. He is therefore taken to the operating table as initially agreed.

Awakening and ultimately survival

After an hour of surgery, the doctor comes out and announces that TJ “woke up.” “They finally stopped the operation because he showed too many signs of life,” his sister said indignantly. “He made several attempts that day to tell us: ‘I’m here’. But we ignored him,” she says again. 3 years later, TJ Hoover is still alive, although doctors assured him that he would not survive long.

If the story resurfaces today it is because several of the doctors are seeking to shed light on this day. Nyckoletta Martin, who was employed at the organ donation center at the time, contacted TJ’s sister.

She informed him that, during the operation, “he was moving” and “fussing a little in all directions.” “He was clearly crying,” she told NPR radio. Two doctors therefore refused to perform the operation.

Since then, the federal office in Kentucky has been “investigating these allegations.” Nyckoletta Martin, for her part, resigned and had to undergo therapy, shocked by this event. Several of his colleagues took the same path.
