Gaz de Tahiti hopes for “healthy and respectful competition”

Georges Siu announces that he will revise Gaz de Tahiti’s offer to try to remain competitive with Mana Gaz, whose gas stock represents a quarter of annual consumption at fenua. He does not believe in plastic cylinders, less robust and less durable than steel ones, and highlights the experience of his company. But admits that he will have to revise his prices.

Georges Siu, boss of Gaz de Tahiti, reacted to the statements of Albert and Patrick Moux who launched the distribution of Mana Gaz this Friday. And although he “congratulates” his new competitor, he nevertheless finds the strong criticism his company has received from Patrick Moux “inappropriate”.

It defends the steel gas cylinder, whose lifespan can reach “50 or 60 years” while that of a composite bottle of the type chosen by Mana Gaz would not exceed 15 years. More robust according to him, it would therefore be more suitable for shipping to the islands. It is also, he says, from an abundant and infinitely recyclable resource, which is not the case with the composite bottle.

“I don’t sell gas, I sell know-how and expertise”

The director of Gaz de Tahiti, who recognizes the benefits of competition for consumers, hopes that it will be “healthy and respectful”. The security implemented throughout the chain, the controls and the investments made over the years have a price, he recalls. : “When we say healthy, it means respect in practice. I want this job to really be done according to the rules. We cannot skimp on the way we transport the bottles and handle them. It’s not all about installing a gas depot. Today we are the only gas expert. I don’t sell gas, I sell know-how and expertise. » And he slips: “Behind very low prices, there are certainly things that are not being achieved. »

Prices: “We will look at what is possible”

But Georges Siu is undeniably worried. The 2,700 tonnes of gas imported by Mana Gaz represent more than a quarter of the local market, which consumes 10,400 tonnes of gas per year. Especially since he will inaugurate, on 2e semester 2025, “the largest sphere of gas in the world” with a capacity of 5,000 m3. It is difficult at this stage to say what market share Mana Gaz will be able to carve out – Patrick Moux, for his part, had remained silent on his objectives.

Gaz de Tahiti will therefore revise its offer. “We will actually ask our sales department to look at what is possible and what is not possible. But lowering our prices, just for the sake of lowering prices, is not a healthy practice. » As for the refusal to distribute Mana Gaz in Mobil stations, it would simply be a matter of waiting for the sales director to return from vacation.
