: domestic fires explained to high school students

Lhe 165 students from the vocational high school and 414 students from the Edouard-Branly general and technological high school will have access in whole classes and for two hours to training on fire risks at home. A sequence took place this Thursday, October 17. “ This is in no way a lecture course but rather interactive exchanges », stipulates Chief Warrant Officer Robert Radke in charge of the mission with his colleague Chief Corporal Emmanuel Lansmant.

The two officers participate in the SDIS 80 citizenship service unit. We rely on practical cases. Our listeners are always surprised when we tell them that the temperature released by a simple candle rises between 800 and 1000 degrees. “. High school students will be treated to a demonstration of a low-intensity explosion and will go to a gas valve for an explanation of how it works. “ The fact that the intervention is animated around practical work appealed to me », confides Julie Quertier, assistant principal of the host establishment. “ High school students access citizenship through information and we hope that they will spread the good word to their families. ».

The speakers draw up an exhaustive list of all the risks in the house. The proper use of battery chargers or household appliances is explained. They insist on the essential installation of smoke detectors. “ Our intervention is part of a program financed by the Regional Council. The objective announced at the start of the action in March 2023 is to initially inform the 22 public high schools in the department. By the end of 2024 we will have raised awareness among 17, or around 5,000 students. »
