This Wednesday mid-morning, smoke was seen coming out of one of the community of communes’ dumpsters, located in a collective trash room on Place de la Bascule. Three witnesses, who arrived on the scene, noticed the start of a fire, one of them courageously removed the burning skip from the premises in order to prevent everything from catching fire due to the wind blowing.
The firefighters were alerted and an elected official went to the scene.
According to a witness, the departure was accidental. A walker stopped to throw something which then set the dumpster on fire. Firefighters intervened and quickly brought the fire under control. The worst was avoided thanks to the reflex of the retiree having moved aside the skip which was touching other containers full of boxes and which were against a house.
This problem of collective deposit spaces raises questions among residents. If collective spaces were removed, this would allow a return to individual responsibilities according to several residents who witnessed the incident.
The subject of trash cans in the rural commune of Saint-Sulpice-sur-Lèze gives rise to concerns. Several acts of incivility, ranging from illegal dumping to starting fires in garbage dumpsters, have been recorded in the town. According to local residents, the vast majority of these acts are committed by people from outside the village. But sometimes, these are poorly informed residents, despite the town hall’s notice, informing fellow citizens of the penalties incurred for non-compliance with the use of garbage collection points.
