Jeline Vandromme wins her second group match in Chengdu

Jeline Vandromme won her second group match of the ITF World Tour Junior Finals, the season-ending Junior Masters, on Thursday in Chengdu, China.

Vandromme, 9th in the world among juniors and seeded N.6, won in two sets 7-6 (7/5), 6-1 against the Japanese Wakana Sonobe, 6th in the world and seeded N.4. The meeting lasted 1 hour and 26 minutes.

This prestigious end-of-year tournament brings together eight of the best juniors, divided into two groups of four. Vandromme, who is part of Group A, lost his first match on Wednesday against Australian world No.1 Emerson Jones. The Brugesoise still has to meet the Chilean Antonia Vergara Rivera (ITF 15). The top two from each group advance to the semi-finals.

European champion and winner of the Under-16 Masters last year (the first Belgian to win since Kim Clijsters in 1997), the Bruges resident reached the quarter-finals this year at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon and was released in the round of 16 at the US Open for her first Grand Slam tournaments. She won two tournaments this season, in the J3000 category, with the Astrid Bowl in Charleroi and at the Copa Barranquilla in Colombia.

By winning the Astrid Bowl, Jeline Vandromme also became, last May, the first Belgian to win this tournament since Dominique Monami in 1991.
