images of Annonay in Ardèche and the A47 motorway flooded

The town of Annonay, in Ardèche, was flooded this Thursday, October 17 after the heavy rains which fell in the department, classified as red alert for floods.

The town center of Annonay in Ardèche was evacuated due to flooding this Thursday, October 17, while the department was placed on red flood alert.

The Déôme river which “passes under the roads” has “overflowed onto the major axis of the town of Annonay where there are many shops and public services”, explained PS mayor Simon Plenet on BFMTV.

“We made the decision to close schools and nurseries,” adds the elected official, calling on residents to “stay at home” and not “go get your vehicle.”

In video images posted on social networks, torrents of water can be seen in the streets of the city, with submerged vehicles.

The A47 flooded

North of Annonay, the A47 motorway which connects (Rhône) to Saint-Etienne () was also flooded, trapping some motorists in the Givors sector, in the Lyon metropolis.

“The A47 motorway has been closed from interchange no. 10 ‘Givors Ouest’ (Saint-Étienne>Lyon)
and at Ternay (Lyon > Saint-Étienne)”, indicates a press release from the prefect of Rhône.

The Gier, a river which runs along the A47 and flows into the Rhône south of Lyon, has been placed on red flood alert. The Rhône department remains, for the moment, classified in orange vigilance.
