, , … In which cities are baguettes sold the most?

The price of the baguette varies significantly from one city to another. This is the finding of a study carried out by Hello Fresh on the occasion of National Bread Day which takes place this Wednesday, October 16.

An outbreak. While the price of a baguette hovered around 0.64 cents, or around 4 francs in the 2000s, according to the inflation site, it is now one euro on average. But this price actually varies from one city to another.

This is the finding of a study carried out by Hello Fresh with 10 bakeries in each of the 10 largest cities in the country. And contrary to what one might think, is not alone at the top of the podium.

The cities where the price of a baguette is the highest are Paris and Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin), with an average price of 1.19 euros. But be careful, it is in the capital that certain bakeries charge the highest prices, with baguettes at 1.45 euros.

“Despite its similar average price, Strasbourg does not present baguettes at such a high price, offering greater homogeneity of prices,” explains Hello Fresh.

Just behind Paris and Strasbourg, we find () where the average fare is 1.12 euros. Lille (North) and (Alpes-Maritimes) come just behind with baguettes at 1.10 and 1.08 euros on average.

A baguette for less than a euro in

Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône) and (-Atlantique) stand out from the rest of the country by being the only cities where you can still find baguettes under the one euro mark. A minimum of 0.80 cents was even recorded in Marseille where the average price is around 0.97 cents.

This disparity between cities is partly explained by the cost of rent. From a national point of view, the surge in the price of bread in recent years is caused by “the price of wheat, the rise in the price of flour, butter and energy and the rise in wages”, the National Confederation of French Bakery and Pastry.

As a reminder, a baker’s average margin on the sale of a baguette is 8%. Wages represent 48% of the final price, wheat flour 22%, rents 11%, taxes 6% and energy 5%.
