a 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit the east of the country

Several provinces in eastern Turkey were shaken this Wednesday, October 16, by a 5.9 magnitude earthquake. For the moment, the authorities have not reported any victims.

New earthquake in Türkiye. An earthquake actually occurred this Wednesday at 10:46 a.m. local time. The disaster hit the Kale district, in the province of Malatya, one of the provinces already devastated by the violent 7.8 magnitude earthquake of February 6, 2023. The latter caused more than 53,500 deaths in Turkey and nearly 6,000 in neighboring Syria.

“For the moment, there has been no loss of human life or destruction of property after the 5.9 magnitude earthquake,” the public disaster management agency (Afad) said on X.

For its part, the municipality of Malatya indicated that no “negative development” was to be deplored at this stage. Primary and secondary schools were, however, closed on Wednesday in this city, announced the governor of the province Seddar Yavuz.

In addition, the tremor was felt very strongly in several large cities in the region, including Diyarbarkir, some 140 km from the epicenter, according to AFP correspondents on site. Residents of these large cities immediately rushed outside their buildings, according to images broadcast by Turkish television channels.
